Training in Winter - Tips on Staying Motivated

Winter is well and truly here, so how do you stay motivated through the colder months?

Here are some tips from DASH – Spot on Fitness on how to stay motivated and keep your training up throughout winter.

There are many benefits to exercising in the cold. You use more energy in winter, which equates to burning more kilojoules. And as you're burning more energy, you sleep better at night.

Regular exercise is also one of the best ways to boost your immune system and fend off wintertime colds and other illnesses.

Here are a few ways to keep your motivation levels up during winter:

GEAR UP –

If you are planning on exercising outdoors the right clothes can make a world of difference. Start with a base layer that wicks away moisture. The drier you are, the warmer you'll be. Look for fabrics such as Coolmax, Duofold, or Capilene, to name a few. Then add a fleece middle layer-or two if it's really cold for warmth. And top it off with a wind and waterproof top layer such as Gore-Tex to protect you from the elements. And don't forget about your head, hands, and toes.

EMBRACE THE SUN –

Soak up some rays whenever it's sunny, get outside. The sunlight can beat the blues that might be sabotaging your exercise routine. In addition, it may also help to calm cravings.

MIX IT UP –

Try something new join a boxing class or try a bootcamp. The excitement of a new activity may be just what you need. If you have to pay for the class, it can be additional motivation to make sure you don't miss it.

DON’T DO IT ALONE –

Find an exercise buddy, someone who will workout with you. Often it is easier to train when you have someone to do it with. Plus the added motivation of not letting your friend down will help to keep you coming back for more.

But there are a few things to be aware of when you're exercising in the cold:

• Warm-up is important at any time, but particularly during the colder months, as the body's temperature is generally a little lower and the joints take a little longer to warm up properly.
• Stretching is especially important in the winter months when it's easier to cramp up or strain a cold muscle.
• Remember to moisturise. Put a moisturiser on your lips, face, hands or any other area that may be susceptible to the drying effects of the colder air.
• Drink plenty of water. It's as easy to become dehydrated during the cold months, as in the scorching summer heat, so carry a water bottle with you and drink plenty of fluids after your workout. Most people forget the importance of water during the colder months.
• People who are prone to asthma should make sure they carry Ventolin, as they are more susceptible to asthma with the cold air.
• Whenever exercise is stopped or paused for any longer than a couple of minutes, take off any wet clothes as soon as possible and put on a jacket and tracksuit pants to avoid getting a chill.
